Both Avatar: The Last Airbender and James Cameron’s Avatar are allegories of Westerners who take pleasure in the fantasy of inhabiting and controlling Others.

So what if social life is performance?

The question is still if such a life is pleasurable.

Moderation, mastery.

Pleasure is the basic question of self-moderation. Pain is the basic question of self-mastery.

Status, fame, pleasure.

I wouldn’t follow your dreams; I’d dream dreams worth following first.

There is no reason to carry on.

Utilitarianism aims to “maximize” goods.

The resemblance to capitalism is clear. Utilitarianism calls its good “pleasure,” while capitalism calls its good “profit.”

Two kinds of individuality.

The first takes pleasure in commonality, the second takes refuge in it.

He enjoys complaining to others.

I would enjoy learning what pleasures he secretly reserves.

It’s alright that you’re not into me.

We can’t all have impeccable taste.
